Synopsis
Oh Grindavík tells the story of the evacuation of all residents from one of Iceland's most prosperous towns and fishing hubs, Grindavík, following a major series of volcanic eruptions. As soon as Grindavík was evacuated, a life-and-death struggle began to save the town from further destruction by every means available: the construction of protective barriers, lava cooling, and repairs to roads and other infrastructure. At the same time, the people of Grindavík were forced to find new homes and begin new lives, jobs, and businesses elsewhere, while packing up and closing down their old homes, businesses, and lives. Today the struggle of the people of Grindavík is at its peak, and it remains entirely uncertain whether it will be possible to prevent this precious community from becoming another Pompeii of the North.
